Welcome to Ridiculous Rebadges, a series of articles in which I go through and examine the details and circumstances surrounding some of the more infamous and some of the more esoteric vehicular rebadges throughout automotive history.

This rebdage was recommended to me by RazoE. Thanks again!

Proton, the Malaysian automaker most commonly known in the Western world for owning Lotus and building Daewoo-quality cars, is one of the strongest automotive brands within its native land. Despite being a rather successful manufacturer, however, Proton has always relied on rebadging Mitsubishis to fill up their model line. Today’s model is no different: the Proton Perdana, introduced in 1995, was originally a rebadged Galant/Eterna with an Alfa-style triangular grille slapped onto the front towards the later 2000s. Throughout this fifteen year period, Proton tried several times to replace the Perdana, which has long been the flagship of their fleet. In 2004, a Volkswagen partnership was considered but fell through, and again in 2011 a contract was signed to rebadge Nissan Fugas which never materialized either (and seems to instead have resulted in the Mitsubishi Proudia/Dignity). Finally, in 2012 a deal was made with Honda to give the outgoing eighth generation North American Accord for Proton to produce under the Perdana name, and in 2013, the first of the so called New-look Perdanas were rolled out. As planned by Honda, these cars were not competing with themselves in the Accord as the next generation Accord was being released simultaneously. This new Perdana was used similarly to the old Perdana in government fleets, although this one was sold exclusively to the Malaysian government and used as national limousines and diplomatic symbols. A new Perdana, developed under the name P4-90B, is set to be released this year as a Proton-exclusive design marketed to the general public.

Well to be honest I could only find a picture of one of the later generations, although because it was marketed as a flagship perhaps they made sure to improve the appearance over the Mitsu.
